The goal of the Gender Transcender is to create an online space to critically engage with, discuss, learn about, deconstruct, and subvert gender(s).
We recognize that:
- Everyone experiences or “does” gender(s) in different ways.
- There are a number of different philosophical positions or gender theories that one may subscribe to.
The Gender Transcender is particularly interested in:
- subverting the gender binary
- deconstructing the gender binary
- exploring different ways of conceptualising, stereotyping or “doing” gender in different parts of the world
- destroying gender myths and stereotypes
- exploring the concepts of ‘pangender’, ‘genderqueer’, ‘intergender’, ‘genderfluid’, ‘bigender’, ‘agender’, ‘non-gendered’, ‘gender-neutral’, and ‘multigendered’
- exposing and rectifying the negative human rights implications of gender(s)
We aim to appeal and be accessible to people of all walks of life. This means that, while we encourage continuous learning and wide reading on gender topics, you should not need a degree in gender theory to understand or contribute to this website.
You also do not need to identify as anything outside the traditional gender binary to get something out of this website. In fact it is hoped that, through this website, people who have taken cisnormativity (the idea that everyone’s gender simply matches their “biological sex”) for granted will be able to not only learn something new about how society functions in ways that marginalize other people, but to learn more about themselves through self-reflection on their gender identity, behavior and attitudes towards gender.
It is hoped that even people who have never questioned the gender binary or gender stereotypes may be drawn in by the radical – but hugely liberating – ideal of gender subversion or transcendence.
